Lumière — French for "light" — captures the essence of this project perfectly. The homeowners, a multi-generational family in Banting, Selangor, wanted a home that felt both deeply rooted in Chinese cultural identity and refreshingly contemporary. They came to us seeking New Chinese design (新中式) — a style that balances heritage and modernity without leaning into pastiche.
Our response was a warm, luminous palette: ivory and cream base tones set against dark walnut joinery and accents of sage green and warm brass. Traditional Chinese design elements — the lattice screen, the scholar's rock, the asymmetric shelf composition — were reinterpreted in clean modern forms, never literal, always felt.
From the double-volume foyer that draws afternoon light deep into the home, to the master bathroom's spa-like serenity, Lumière Residence is a study in how cultural identity and contemporary living can coexist — beautifully.
The living room at Lumière Residence is designed around the idea of calm presence. A custom fluted walnut TV feature wall serves as the room's focal anchor, flanked by recessed open shelving where curated objects — books, ceramics, a single dried branch — speak to the family's refined sensibility.
The sofa arrangement faces the garden, drawing the eye outward. A hand-knotted wool rug in warm ivory defines the seating zone, while a pendant light with a paper lantern silhouette references Chinese craft traditions in a thoroughly contemporary form. The result is a living room that invites you to slow down.
For a Chinese Malaysian family, the kitchen is the heartbeat of the home. At Lumière Residence, we designed a full-length galley kitchen that prioritises workflow efficiency without sacrificing beauty.
Upper cabinets in sage green lacquer pair with a warm walnut base to create a two-tone composition that feels simultaneously fresh and grounded. A waterfall island in honed Calacatta marble serves as the primary prep surface and doubles as a casual dining counter for weekday mornings.
A dedicated wet kitchen behind a full-height glass panel keeps cooking aromas contained while maintaining visual connection — a practical solution well-suited to Malaysian cooking habits.
The master bedroom was conceived as a private retreat — a space where the couple could retreat fully from the demands of family life. The palette here is quieter: deep ivory walls meet dark walnut bed joinery and linen drapery that softens the morning light.
A custom headboard wall incorporates subtle ink-wash brushstroke detailing behind a fabric panel — an abstract nod to Chinese ink painting that reads as purely contemporary at first glance. The built-in wardrobe runs the full length of the opposite wall, its fluted door fronts a recurring texture motif throughout the home.
The double-volume foyer is Lumière Residence's defining architectural gesture. A feature wall of hand-painted porcelain tiles — depicting a misty mountain scene in pale blue and grey — greets visitors and sets the home's cultural tone immediately.
A skylight above the stairwell channels afternoon sunlight down through the full height of the space, creating a shifting play of light and shadow that changes with the hours. This was not a coincidence — it was engineered from the earliest planning stage.
Full-length display shelving with soft LED strip lighting, open hanging zones and a central island with drawer storage — every cubic centimetre optimised for a family that values order.
A quieter companion to the master — same material language, softer palette. Full-height curtains in pale linen and a study nook built into the window recess make this room as practical as it is peaceful.
